The shooting of 16 Muslim men by Malian soldiers took place when a vehicle carrying them failed to stop and the troops apparently took them for armed Islamists, who have taken overrun the northern half of the country. The men, who belonged to the Dawa Islamist sect, according to sources in both Mauritania and Mali, had been heading to a religious conference in Bamako.
